Special Education - Central County Regional Programs

Photo of Students at Mauzy SchoolThe Central County Regional Special Education Program provides special day classes and services for approximately 40 students at 2 sites.

The regional office is located at Mauzy School in Alamo. At the Mauzy site there are two preschool/elementary and one combined middle school and high school class for severely handicapped students. In addition, Meadowlark, a typical preschool and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District's early childhood special education programs are located at the site.

Support staff, such as speech therapists, nurses, psychologists, behavior specialists, occupational therapists, augmentative communication specialists, and teachers of vision and hearing impaired students are also part of the program team. In addition, the California Children's Services has a medical therapy unit at the Mauzy site.

Parents are an integral part of our team and provide insight into their child's development and needs. The Mauzy Foundation is an active parent organization that provides funding for classroom equipment and materials that give additional support to all of the special needs students served in the Central County Regional Programs.

Braille Center

The CCCOE Braille Center, provides resource services to students with visual impairments and provides materials in Braille to a wide variety of students throughout Contra Costa County who are either blind or partially sighted. There are two sites— one at the Mauzy School in Alamo and the other at the Joseph A. Ovick School in Brentwood.

The facility, formerly known as the Valley School, was expanded and renamed for Lucille Mauzy in February 1984. Mrs. Mauzy was a prominent member of the Contra Costa County Board of Education from 1956 to 1979. She was a strong advocate for special education and worked tirelessly to bring more special education programs to the county.
