Number Talks 2.0

In this one-day workshop we will embark on how to structure and lead productive mathematical discussions. We will emphasize setting mathematical goals for each number talk, learn how to use models to develop students' conceptual understanding, explore how to productively move students toward efficient strategies for problem solving, and provide timely and appropriate feedback to students. Throughout the workshop we will engage and explore open source resources to take our number talks to the next level in student mathematical thinking and engagement.

Using Texts, Talk, and Conversations to Cultivate Academic Language Across Content Areas with Jeff Zwiers

This session will focus on academic language and literacy development focused on the most important and challenging ELA and ELD Standards. The session will provide a range of experiences and video clips that model instructional activities. These activities embody three key principles of communicativeness needed for maximizing the development of language that students need in school and beyond. The day will also be framed around three high-impact practices: using complex text, fortifying oral and written output, and fostering constructive conversations. Teachers will have time to observe and engage in activities, as well as reflect on how to weave them into their curricula and lessons. Along the way we will spend time honing our skills for assessing oral language and conversations across content areas.

All school districts in Contra Costa County are recruiting for classroom teachers. This is an opportunity for qualified candidates to meet with school districts hiring administrators! Representatives from the Contra Costa County school districts will be at this central location for a day of interaction with candidates. The County Office of Education has a need for teachers in Special Education, Parolee Education, and Jail Education programs that are located throughout the county.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Participants Will Learn: 5-step action plan to offer initial help to young people showing signs of a mental illness or in a crisis, and how to connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

Intended Audience: This training is designed for adults who work with young people, ages 12-18, and who do NOT have a mental health background: teachers, nurses, counselors, coaches, secretaries, campus monitors, yard supervisors, registrars, lunch staff, bus drivers, and leaders of faith communities, law enforcement, parents, and other caring citizens.

Distinquished Speaker Series: Introduction to the CA History-Social Science Framework

The new History-Social Science Framework, which was adopted in July 2016, is being introduced by UC Berkeley's History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP). A central aspect of both efforts is to support teachers in developing inquiry-driven courses that integrate the H-SS Standards (content and historical analysis) and Common Core Standards for Literacy in History and also integrating ELD instructional models.

Intended Audience: K-12 educators, including administrators (site or district), instructional coaches, and classroom teachers.

When: This one-day workshop will be offered on two separate dates.

Distinguished Speaker Series – Making Statistical Connections

The California Common Core Mathematics Content Standards have incorporated statistics and probability standards in grades 6-12. The California Mathematics Project (CMP), in partnership with the California Mathematics Council (CMC), and the California Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (CAMTE) has developed a series of modules for grades 6-12 teachers to support the teaching and learning of statistics and probability.

This two-day workshop will take a close look at the modules, instructional guides for educators, and the materials available for use with teachers focusing specifically on grades 6-12. Presenters will begin by introducing the GAISE (Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education) Framework and provide opportunities for teachers to experience the progressions of statistics and probability standards in middle school through high school. All activities are interactive, modeling teaching and learning strategies for students.The workshop incorporates technology and ELD strategies in order to address 21st-century learning needs.

Solving the Fraction Mystery

Fractions are conceptually difficult for many. Moving beyond pizza and pie models, we will explore the many ways for developing fraction understanding including using concrete manipulatives. Throughout this two-day workshop participants will engage in conceptually meaningful mathematics tasks for all fraction operations. Participants will have the opportunity to gain a foundational understanding of fractions. Our journey through fractions will conclude with connections to ratios and proportional reasoning.
