Human Trafficking & Commercial Exploitation of Children

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and a fundamental violation of a person's human rights. Given the trafficking trends throughout the world, we know that the East Bay region, and more specifically Contra Costa County, is not immune to the plight of trafficked and exploited persons. The average age of entry into human sex trafficking is 12 – some of our students may already be targeted by exploiters.

Number Talks 1.0 - TK - 5

Number Talks support implementation of the California Standards in Mathematics (CCCSS). Participants engage in discourse, conversations, and alternative thinking in mathematics.

This workshop is framed around the Number Talks book, written by Sherry Parrish. The book contains more than 850 purposefully designed number talks and a DVD featuring 19 number talks filmed in actual classrooms. These resources are included in the price of the workshop.

CCCOE Distinguished Speaker Series: Teaching Earth Systems and Building Design using STEAM with Ladie Malek

Earth Systems can be taught as a very interdisciplinary unit, incorporating everything from geology, paleontology, and oceanography to structural engineering, architecture, and business planning. Participants in this workshop will explore phenomenon-based curriculum design and story line development. Ladie Malek will take participants through the 5E lesson structure for guided inquiry using earth science mysteries. Participants will learn about some of the processes that shape our planet while exploring NGSS units, including a STEAM engineering project. Content will be focused on Middle School NGSS Standards, but the pedagogy is adapted to all grades.

What's in a Number? Exploring Mathematics Conceptually

During this one-day workshop, participants will explore and experience mathematics conceptually, building a deeper understanding of how math works. We will begin our journey in the number system through the understanding of numbers and operations and make connections to algebraic thinking and progressions through the grade levels. Participants will have an opportunity to collaborate with peers on shifts in teaching and learning through the implementation of the common core state standards.

Introduction to the CA History-Social Science Framework

UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project's (UCBHSSP) will introduce participants to the new History-Social Science framework, which was adopted in July 2016. A central aspect of both efforts is to support teaches in developing inquiry-driven courses that integrate the H-SS Standards (content and historical analysis) and Common Core Standards for Literacy in History while integrating ELD instructional models.

UCBHSSP staff will provide a one-day orientation to the History-Social Science Framework, based on their vast experience working with teachers on integrating new approaches to learning.

This workshop is to introduce Administrators and Counselors to Costa Contra County Office of Education's (CCCOE) Regional Partnership with Code.org.

Learn how your site can access high-quality computer science curriculum and professional learning opportunities for educators.

Attendees will learn about Code.org's Middle School and High School computer science courses and explore tools to build computer science courses for the 2018-19 school year. Discover how CCCOE is supporting computer science in Contra Costa County. Participants will receive materials to share with their community about computer science.

Brief Intervention for Substance-Using Adolescents

Brief Intervention is a short-term counseling intervention that consists of two to four sessions aimed at adolescents who use alcohol, tobacco and/or other drugs. Previous training participants include school counselors, administrators, TUPE Site Coordinators, afterschool program staff and community-based organization staff.

Tobacco kills more people than AIDS, alcohol, car crashes, murders, suicides, other drugs, and first combined.

Despite fewer teens smoking than ever before, tobacco is still a major health issue and it affects some communities a lot more than others. Explore the tobacco industry targeting of the African American community, health disparities, and prevention strategies.

This training will provide the opportunity for participants to increase their understanding and skills to create safer, more inclusive classroom environments for young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ).

Youth Mental Health – Eliminating Barriers to Learning

This workshop will offer information on student social-emotional wellness, including the links between student social-emotional development, mental health, and learning. It also addresses the impact of the stigma and discrimination that surround mental health issues and explores the role of teachers' and other staff in helping students with mental health needs.

This workshop is intended for those who do not have a clinical background.
